Warren Township bears the name of one of
the true heroes of the American Revolution, Boston’s Joseph Warren.
A fiery patriot, ever firm in the cause of liberty, Warren is
remembered, in the words of Daniel Webster, as “the first great
martyr to this great cause.” His death at the Battle of Bunker Hill
in 1775 at age 34 enshrined his memory in the American pantheon.
When Somerset County’s newest township was formed in 1806, its
citizens chose a name that would honor America’s first national
hero. Born in Roxbury, Mass. in 1741, Warren graduated from Harvard
College, studied medicine and set up his practice in Boston, where
his patients ranged from the very poor to Paul Revere and John
Adams. His association with the likes of Revere and Adams drew him
into the patriot circle. His effective leadership and eloquent
speeches soon earned the enmity of the British, one of whom called
him “the greatest incendiary in America.” |
