The county was established in 1675, but the origin of the name remains in question. Some believe the name may come from the Rhode Island Monmouth Society. Other history buffs believe that perhaps Colonel Lewis Morris, the first British governor of New Jersey, suggested that the county be named after Monmouthshire in Great Britain. Other theories include that it was named for James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, who had many supporters among leaders in East Jersey. However the name evolved, the county is now comprised of 54 municipalities, each with its own unique story. We hope you enjoy reading about how each of these towns has carved its own place in the history of the county and the state. The county’s most prominent historical event was the Battle of Monmouth, which was the longest land battle of the Revolutionary War lore.
